Deeply devout family of Sampradaya Bhajan padathi, made him sing abhangs. His family Guru Sri Sri Krishnapremi Maharaj encouraged his talent in Marathi abhangs for which he had a special flavor. After undergoing vigorous training in Varakari Sampradaya (the way it is done in Maharashtra) i.e. singing abhangs, his guru blessed him with the title "Tukaram" (name of a Marathi Saint composer).

From then on Ganapathi moorthi came to be more popularly known as Tukaram Ganapathi Maharaj. Being in Tamilnadu, Sri Tukaram Ganapathi Maharaj toiled a lot to learn the nuances of Varakari Sampradaya and presented it in its pristine pure nature. Sri Tukaram Ganapathi Maharaj is the pioneer in introducing Harikirthan (lacing the abhangs with tamil explanations in Harikatha form) in Tamilnadu. Harikirthan (Sangeetha Upanyasam) is the name with which it is popularly known in Maharashtra.
